Job Description

Media Intelligence Specialist – Under the direct guidance of the Media Intelligence Team Lead, and in collaboration with other team members, the Media Intelligence Specialist develops daily and weekly briefings of media mentions of BNY Mellon, competitors, and media trends. S/he carries out rigorous quality control for daily and weekly briefings. S/he also oversees and participates in daily entry of media clips data into a proprietary repository, and carries out regular data quality audits with the direction of the Media Intelligence Team Lead. From this database, s/he prepares initial drafts of standard reporting on BNY Mellon and competitors in the form of tables and charts. S/he also prepares drafts of standard and ad hoc Media Intelligence research assignments, and provides support on wider team research projects assigned by colleagues within the External Communications (i.e., Public relations) function. S/he must be able to compile high volumes of media content and extract relevant trends and insights. S/he must take primary responsibility for the accuracy and quality of own work, and for reviewing the accuracy and quality of colleagues’ work. Work is expected to contribute to the achievement of Media Intelligence Team and External Communication Team goals. S/he will act as the deputy for the Media Intelligence Team and will provide team leadership when the Team Lead is out of the office or unavailable (e.g., PTO). Candidates must have demonstrable experience in handling multiple, simultaneous projects in a fast-paced, newsroom-like environment, and in managing workload spikes. They must be highly effective and responsive communicators, able to present information to senior business and communications coworkers around the world. Above all, they must be passionate news lovers who understand the importance of news cycles and the importance of reputation management. Typical projects might include:
  • Compiling a round-up of significant coverage of a particular financial services or technology topic
  • Developing a thorough competitive analysis of media results for BNY Mellon and other banks in its space, focused on a particular business topic
  • Creating a quarter-by-quarter, year-on-year report of media share of voice with robust analytics and data visualizations
  • Monitoring for breaking news about issues that impact company reputation
  • Presenting intelligence and insights to an audience of senior communications, marketing, and business function stakeholders


  • Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent (master’s or equivalent in library sciences, information sciences, or similar disciplines preferred)
  • Flawless English written and oral communication skills
  • Rigorous attention to detail, quality, and on-time delivery
  • Track record of working within a collaborative team
  • Advanced proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Advance proficiency in the use of Internet search engines
  • Familiarity with numerical and visual reporting
  • Demonstrable analytical and problem-solving skills
  • A minimum 5 years’ total work experience completing research projects in a business context strongly preferred
  • A minimum 5 years’ total work experience in a Communications or Public Relations department strongly preferred
  • A minimum 3 years’ total work experience in Financial Services strongly preferred
  • Facility with Factiva, LexisNexis, or similar media content databases strongly preferred
  • Basic reading knowledge of at least one major European or East Asian language preferred.
