Job Description

As the Lead Accounting Specialist for the Institutional Accounting group in EMEA you will support the Director, EMEA Institutional Accounting in ensuring that the function adheres to the relevant generally accepted accounting practices for the clients the function services and that all reporting meets these relevant accounting standards. This will include ensuring the reports for our clients are as consistent as possible, in line with clients (and their Auditors) expectations, meets our reporting requirements as defined by our client SLDs and that these all stay in line with current and future reporting requirements, while ensuring that all transactions are represented correctly.  

This will include working closely with the wider Accounting team and on occasion the clients’ auditors to ensure that the books and records correctly account for both standard and non-standard transactions, mitigating risk of mis-representation of these so that we are in-line with the relevant accounting rules and regulations.

Support the Accounting team in dealing with technical accounting queries from clients and work with all relevant changes required to bring the standard reporting into line with future accounting changes.

Alongside the technical aspects of this role, the individual will also lead the functions involvement in to the Third Party Governance function, ensuring that we stay compliant with all aspects of the Banks outsourcing policies.

Lead the departments participation in the assessment of the applicability and subsequent implementation of all accounting and regulatory changes for the function. In addition, support the product development function, where applicable to the Accounting function.

There will also be opportunities to bring your experience and insight to the wider BNYM group in support of particular transactions or identification of issues where the solution will be outside of Institutional Accounting in areas such as derivatives, corporate events and tax processing. Thus being able to work across different areas and building robust relationships will enable you to have a far reaching impact.

Key responsibilities:

  • Ensure there is tight governance over accounting interpretations

  • Work with counterparts across the region to ensure consistency of treatment and application

  • Support the assessment and applicability of upcoming accounting and regulatory changes to the function.

  • Work with the Accounting group to deal with complex accounting issues or queries both internally and from clients

  • Analysis of transactions, in particular the impact to the way Institutional Accounting need to process and reflect these into all relevant reporting

  • Support the functions commercial efforts regarding technical accounting queries and regulatory requirements

Projects and Change
  • Lead the analysis and implementation of new accounting standards or regulatory change that impacts the function

  • Understand the impact across legal entities and all lines of business that support the overall accounting process

  • Communication of accounting or policy changes to the wider function and other stakeholders


Person Specification/ Qualifications:
  • Qualified accountant with post qualification experience

  • Financial services experience preferred
  • In depth knowledge of IFRS to include Pension SORP

  • Proven track record in translating accounting theory into practical application

  • Project management and outsourcing experiences would be desirable
