Group Manager, Corporate Tax

Job Description

Helps drive and implement the strategic corporate tax program within the business/business partner areas. Sets priorities and allocates resources to align with organization-wide market risk objectives. Has an in-depth understanding of Ch. 3, Ch. 4 and Ch. 61 of the Internal Revenue Code and corresponding regulations. Recommends and implements changes in policies and procedures to ensure compliance with regulatory changes.  Recognized as a leader in addressing tax related matters and in motivating junior team members.

 

Communicates effectively with senior business management. Leverages nuanced tax techniques to achieve business objectives. Works with other business units, operations and technology and liaises with legal and compliance staff in relation to regulatory matters.  Demonstrates compliance with policies and standards to corporate management, internal and external auditors and regulatory bodies.

 

Coaches and guides junior staff on improving the execution of complicated tax activities and achievement of multi-faceted goals. Directly manages junior staff and market risk staff and ensures their focus on daily tasks to deliver on initiatives. Manages development and talent management of more junior staff.

Specific job functions include-

Return & Deposit Compliance -

·              Provide a thorough review of each deliverable with detailed points for the preparer, if required

·              Review returns and approve deposits by the deadline

·              Review monthly interim returns and communicate any issues to the appropriate business unit

·              Conduct trainings for business units regarding deposit process and return preparation

·              Review and approve refund requests from business units

·              Communicate issues as they arise and follow through to resolution

·              Review and approve account reconciliations for on and off balance sheet accounts, ensuring all reconciling items have adequate supporting documents

·              Review and approve accounting entries, ensuring all journal entries have adequate supporting documents

·              Ensure refunds are matched to accounts receivable and work with accounting for adjustments

·              Ensure deliverables are archived appropriately immediately upon completion

·              Compile key return metrics immediately upon completion for senior management review

·              Review and update process and procedure documents to post on firm system


      Compliance Testing

·              Review end to end compliance including:

o   Validating onboarding documentation against account opening documents and source system information

o   Reviewing transaction information to determine US vs foreign source and reportable transactions

o   Reviewing transaction information to ensure withholding rates were correctly applied, if applicable

o   Reviewing tax reporting statements against all of the above to validate accuracy

·         Instruct junior team members on how to review an account end to end

·         Create project plans and conduct interim touchpoints with the team to ensure deadlines are met

·         Compile review results in a way to provide metrics on an as needed or daily basis

·         Conduct articulate kickoff meetings with the businesses or tax utilities

·         Present findings in a concise and clear manner with examples to during the presentation

·         Review and update process and procedure documents to post on firm system

 

Tax Research

·              Perform federal and state tax research regarding information reporting requirements for non-payroll withholding

·              Draft communication to taxing authorities in response to notices

·              Review and summarize large amounts of data via MS excel and access

·              Track issues via Confluence and resolve within 30 days

·              Communicate issues as they arise and follow through to resolution

 

Robotics

·              Create Visio diagrams of cross functional process flows

·              Review functional requirements documents to ensure accuracy

·              Complete risk assessments and testing

·              Communicate requirements clearly and effectively with developers

·              Continuously monitor robots to ensure they are working appropriately

·              Track terminations and escalation issues as they arise 

 

FATCA Attestations

·              Understand the tax technical requirements of FATCA entity classifications, responsible officers, and IRS certifications

·              Navigate the internal responsible officer certification system

·              Communicate effectively with responsible officers, functional owners, FATCA certification officers, and senior management

·              Conduct responsible officer certification training

·              Escalate issues as they arise to management

·              Track certifications in a way to provide metrics on an as needed or daily basis

·              Review certification responses for deficiencies and, if required, conduct further meetings with the appropriate parties

·              Ensure reviewed certification responses are posted to the Corporate Tax FATCA intranet site in a timely manner

·              Archive certifications upon completion

·              Review and update process and procedure documents to post on firm system

 

Invoicing

·              Ensure invoices are approved by the appropriate Managing Director or delegate

·              Review and approve invoices in Peoplesoft

·              Review Third Party Governance Application requests and respond to questions within 24 hours

·              Track invoices and SOWs in a way that they can be immediately accessed in order to respond to questions and provide metrics

·              Create budget to actual review on a monthly basis

·              Communicate with vendors to ensure that invoices are received on a monthly basis

·              Escalate issues as they arise

·              Review and update process and procedure documents to post on firm system


Technology requirements-

·              Advanced MS excel

·              Moderate MS access 

·              Advanced MS PowerPoint

·              Moderate MS SharePoint

·              Advanced MS Word

·              Experience with tax compliance preparation software (ie. OneSource, ProSystems, Corptax)

·              Ability to learn new technology easily

·              Understanding of how internet pages are built in order to move, organize and navigate them


Qualifications

Bachelor s degree or the equivalent combination of education and experience is required. 10-12 years of total work experience with at least 1-3 years in management preferred. Experience in tax at a large Certified Public Accounting (CPA) firm or law firm preferred.
