As part one of the safest and most trusted financial institutions, the BNY Mellon Legal department mitigates risk and handles legal affairs to ensure the security of the company and its clients. BNY Mellon's Legal Department, has overall responsibility for government affairs and advises on advocacy and policy initiatives of the company to support BNY Mellon's domestic and international operations, and they also support all bank regulatory and supervisory issues.
This attorney will be part of the team within BNY Mellon’s Legal Department that is primary legal advisor to the global functional areas of Technology, Digital, Resiliency, Marketing and Corporate Communications and is composed of SMEs on the substantive areas of intellectual property, marketing, cybersecurity and privacy law. This role’s responsibilities include:
Provide legal advice on global technology initiatives, which may include infrastructure and cloud strategy, product development and enhancements, licensing of IP and use of new technologies (eg ML, AI, NLP, DLT).
Stay abreast of legal and strategic developments in the financial services sector involving new technologies and provide succinct updates to senior stakeholders.
Partner with the Digital team to support and shape strategic initiatives.
Draft and negotiate technology and IP provisions of client facing agreements.
Participate in industry association activities related to new technologies, engage in legislative consultation periods and collaborate with public affairs and regulatory colleagues and regional counterparts on same.
Review presentation materials for executive and Board committees.
Perform legal research on key issues within the remit of the team.
Create and conduct periodic client training programs on IP and technology law.
5+ years’ experience.
In-house counsel experience preferred.
Attorney with strong working knowledge of intellectual property and technology law, ideally in financial services or another critical infrastructure sector.
Information technology background (eg computer science) highly desirable.
Knowledge of fintech developments and innovation in the financial services sector preferred. Strong interest in same is critical.
Experience in technology contract drafting and negotiation desirable.
