Job Description


To be a key shaper, together with a small but highly dedicated team, of world class oversight of outsourced IT operations in a global financial business.

Success can be defined as follows:  it will be the interview in 2024 given by the successful candidate either to CIO magazine, or to The Banker, given on how the post was moved over the last years to redefine the best practices in complex IT outsourcing oversight in a regulated environment.  Alternatively, a keynote at the Worldwide Gartner CIO forum on the topic will also do.

  • Participate in and drive oversight of outsourced activities of a systemic Bank, BNY Mellon SA/NV, to its parent. Be a key contributor to and shaper of the governance and oversight needed by the European Bank, as required by ECB and EBA guidelines.

  • Monitor performance on a risk, operations and commercial level.

  • Work closely with the broader BNY Mellon Technology organisation in identifying opportunities for process improvements and best practice adoption across the European Bank and the wider organisation.

  • Support client specific developments which require local extensions of global IT applications/processes or are specific to the needs of BNY Mellon SA/NV.

  • Analyse performance across the IT landscape and relentlessly identify improvement opportunities for BNY Mellon SA/NV.  Develop a continuous improvement methodology that proves to be unstoppable.

  • Contribute to the success and relevant of the BNY Mellon SA/NV Innovation centre by shaping improvements using fast prototyping, possibly in a Fintech context.  Convince peers and managers to drive certain improvement opportunities.  Socialize for example the use of AI and block-chain across the relevant business lines.

  • Be an effective alternate for the CIO in SA/NV and Institutional bank forums when required.

  • Contribute to the continuous inspiration and professional building a group of 50 diverse professionals in their craftsmanship.  Make the European Bank known as the garden for engineering talent development.

Skills & competencies
  • Engineering mind set (not necessarily a degree but certainly a state of mind), and understanding of business and technical issues

  • Understanding of and affinity for global capital markets and its ecosystems

  • Effective team player, able to influence others and make them grow

  • A gift for pragmatism, even in a tight compliance and risk framework

  • Excellent communicator in simple terms, demystifying technology to non-professional practitioners

  • Affinity with different cultures and an avid promotor of diversity

  • Ability to understand and apply state of the art concepts such as Kafka, Kubernetes or TensorFlow

  • Understand the principles of Project Oxygen
Reporting lines
  • CIO of BNY Mellon SA/NV only
  • Direct reports:  effectively managing the IT professionals of BNY Mellon SA/NV together with or in the absence of the CIO.


  • University or equivalent through experience
  • Speaker/writer/blogger/tweeter at conferences on modern technology deployment

  • Knowledge of the Dreyfus framework is a plus
  • Combining attention to detail with a holistic perspective on risk, technical performance and commercial support of outsourced IT systems
